The group thought it might be useful to focus on training, and thinking ahead to the Unconscious Bias workshop on the 17th of December. We wondered too if we should include thinking about and requesting questions on the Interpreting in Mental Health settings, which is set up for the 6th of November. Jules has asked for questions, so the time online can be used to send thoughts and questions on both workshops and for Julie to collate those to be passed onto Darren, Josef and Jules.
Interpreting difficulties when working with clients who have mental health, linguistic and cognitive challenges, 6th November 2021 9.30 am to 12.30 pm online
Dr Sally Austen, Consultant clinical psychologist, has worked in deaf mental health care for 30 years. Language is hugely affected by mental ill health, by learning disability and by lack of early opportunity. Thus, a large part of Sally’s work involves dealing with the challenges of language difference and deprivation within the deaf population.
The session will be set up as part workshop and part peer supervision. You are invited to ask questions and suggest topics via scotland@asli.org.uk
Sally will then provide some background information to each topic and then chair a peer discussion so that others can share their knowledge and experience.
Exploring Unconscious Bias – A one day introductory workshop for Sign Language Interpreters & Translators, 11th December 2021, 9 am to 5 pm online
Unconscious Bias is often in the news, as an explanation for people’s discriminatory
behaviour and as a way of addressing such behaviour, for example, through
Unconscious Bias training.
In this very interactive workshop we explore:
- Unconscious Bias, the concept and in the ‘real world’, critiques and alternatives.
- How Unconscious Bias impacts on us as interpreters and translators.
- How Unconscious Bias impacts on our interpreting and translation.
- What we can do to address Unconscious Bias.
Josef Baines and Darren Townsend-Handscomb will be delivering the taught sections, and
facilitating the discussions.
The workshop will be delivered mainly in BSL (Josef is a deaf BSL
user).
This workshop will be delivered remotely, with plenty of stretch and eye breaks.
Following the workshop we will share our recommended resource list.
