Samantha is known for being a Transgender educator, and a speaker (via Social media). She hopes to share her experience as a deaf transgender woman. This has led her to dedicate her life to spreading awareness and acceptance of deaf transgender communities around the country and worldwide. Over the last several years, Samantha has shared some of her stories and journeys with the BBC See Hear program and her Facebook group. She manages a deaf transgender forum which covers worldwide awareness, where all deaf transgender people can come together into one forum and share a wealth of knowledge and experience.
This training workshop offers interpreters an opportunity to understand the nuances of the lived experiences of the deaf trans community. You will learn about Samantha’s real life experiences and will discuss case studies.
The training is not about the linguistic needs of a deaf trans person but rather an insight into Samantha’s perspective as a Deaf trans woman. It is about how certain situations should be approached, how to be an ally, factors to consider that you may not have previously thought of, and resources and organisations that you can signpost to.
Activities also include role-playing various scenarios, the transitioning process to name one. This is not something that comes up often in real life interpreting situations, so it is vital that interpreters are well prepared.
Mental health statistics will be presented and we will explore how this impacts the Deaf trans and wider community.
I have an ‘open, ask me anything’ policy for any burning questions people may have.
This course is focused on providing a variety of strategies, knowledge and understanding, upon which you can draw from when working with members of the trans community. Attending this course will not only provide CPD points but it is also a chance to reflect on what has been gained from attending this course and gives a broader insight of the trans community.
The key point here is that whilst there may be various categories of training, it is essential to value the expertise of lived experience.
For ASLI members we are offering a discounted price of £75. Please email westmidlands@asli.org.uk for the discount code.
