DESCRIPTION:Presented in BSL by Dr. Rob Wilks and interpreted into English \nThe BSL Act 2022 was signed into law on 28 April 2022\, signifying a new era in the BSL campaign for legal recognition across the UK. Concerns have been raised regarding its effectiveness\, including the fact that it does not create any new rights for BSL users and instead points to other legislation such as the Equality Act 2010. So then\, can deaf people and BSL/English interpreters rely on it to enforce deaf people’s rights? How does it complement the Equality Act 2010\, if at all? How does one enforce one’s rights under the Equality 2010? \nBio\nDr Rob Wilks has been a qualified solicitor since 2007 and specialises in employment and discrimination law.\nHe is currently a Senior Lecturer in Law for the University of South Wales teaching on a range of undergraduate\, postgraduate and professional courses\, and is one of the supervisors in the Legal Advice Clinic. He was formerly Director of Legal Services at the Royal Association for Deaf people. \nRob was awarded his doctorate in 2020 by the University of Leicester examining the title: ‘Making equality law work for Deaf people.’ His research interests include equality and discrimination law and sign language recognition\, particularly deaf education in Scotland and Wales. \nThis will not be recorded \nYour link will be sent with your booking confirmation.
