Language is hugely affected by mental ill health\, by learning disability and by lack of early opportunity. Thus\, a large part of Sally’s work involves dealing with the challenges of language difference and deprivation within the deaf population.\nThe session will be set up as part workshop and part peer supervision. You are invited to ask questions and suggest topics via scotland@asli.org.uk \nSally will then provide some background information to each topic and then chair a peer discussion so that others can share their knowledge and experience.\nExploring Unconscious Bias – A one day introductory workshop for Sign Language Interpreters & Translators\, 11th December 2021\, 9 am to 5 pm online \nUnconscious Bias is often in the news\, as an explanation for people’s discriminatory\nbehaviour and as a way of addressing such behaviour\, for example\, through\nUnconscious Bias training.\nIn this very interactive workshop we explore:\n\n\nUnconscious Bias\, the concept and in the ‘real world’\, critiques and alternatives.\nHow Unconscious Bias impacts on us as interpreters and translators.\nHow Unconscious Bias impacts on our interpreting and translation.\nWhat we can do to address Unconscious Bias.\n\nJosef Baines and Darren Townsend-Handscomb will be delivering the taught sections\, and\nfacilitating the discussions.\n\nThe workshop will be delivered mainly in BSL (Josef is a deaf BSL\nuser).\n\nThis workshop will be delivered remotely\, with plenty of stretch and eye breaks.\nFollowing the workshop we will share our recommended resource list.
