Course outline

While LSF (French Sign Language) seems to have only a few gender markers, gender is very present in the French language and very binary. That traditional paradigm does not conform with the vision of gender as a spectrum that has been gaining momentum. Furthermore, gender-inclusive language has been more and more used (Abbou, 2022, Viennot, 2014). What about inclusive language within sign language interpreting practices: what are the preferred strategies? Can we consider this as a feminist interpreting practice? How is gender-inclusive language practice consistent, or not, to what we expect from interpreters?

Delphine Thomas Sign language interpreter for 6 years, her experience in Toulouse with very diverse deaf communities and colleagues lead her to continuously question her practice and discuss it with pairs. Being part of EUMASLI 4 cohort has made possible the desire to realise a proper research on the topic of gender-inclusive language and how it can be articulated in interpreting from LSF (French Sign Language) to French language.

Structure:

•⁠ ⁠45 minutes of presenting the research, including background info for people who know nothing about French and LSF.

•⁠ ⁠10 minutes break

•⁠ ⁠30 minutes of reflexive practice exchange, mainly based on situations where gender can challenge the use of working languages.
