You may be familiar with the term ‘Intersectionality’ but may wonder how it relates to interpreting and translation. We’ll look at what the word means, how it can be interpreted but importantly, how we use our own intersections in work.
What dilemmas do we come across when interpreting identity?
What happens with appropriate casting when identities are visible and invisible?
How do we be effective allies?
The webinar will include discussions around extra-linguistic knowledge, assumptions and effective allyship. It aims to give the audience the opportunity to consider what influences their work, and some tools to support them.
There will be breakout rooms and discussions but no obligation to share if you are not interested in doing so.
This session will be presented in BSL with no interpreters. It will not be recorded.

Miles Harris is a registered sign language interpreter (RSLI) and an ASLI South West Rep. Since qualifying in 2021, Miles has worked both in-house and freelance and was one of the founding members of the ASLI Equality, Diversity and Inclusion working group that same year. As part of this group, he has attended various events as an ASLI EDI representative, including the most recent ASLI conference, where he co-chaired a discussion around intersectionality in interpreting with Azaria Francis. Whilst new to the profession, Miles is enthusiastic about how we can integrate equality, equity, diversity and inclusion into our practice.
