Season's Greetings Members!
It may be a little early, but as this is the last bulletin of 2024 we couldn't miss to opportunity to wish you all a happy holiday season and peaceful New Years.
Regional Meetings
The minutes from the previous regional meeting, held on the 17th November are attached to this email.
Regional meetings for 2025 are arranged as follows...
Please note that although we try our best to keep to agreed dates and times that these are subject to change, if the need arises. Members will be informed of any necessary changes via email.
If you would like to add anything to our next meeting's agenda items, please email them to northwest@asli.org.uk.
New Members
Our regional members group is constantly expanding as we welcome those from all over the North West as well as colleagues from other regions, such as the North East.
Whether associate, student, or full members - welcome! - and we hope to meet you very soon. If you have any questions, concerns or feedback please email the committee and one of us will support you.
Membership
All members! Please take note if you have not already done so, you need to log on to the new website, create a profile and add your up-to-date banking details in order to continue your ASLI membership.
The old website was taken down on the 8th April 2024, and we have had a few members not realise their subscription had closed due to not having joined on the new website.
On the new website there is an option to join the North West group! (Hopefully if you are reading this here, you're all set up!)
There are also a newly qualified group and a Trainee group for those who would benefit.
Other groups include those for mentors, professional supervisors, Deaf interpreters network (DIN) and many more!
Anyone wishing to join the EDI working group can email edwg@asli.org.uk.
Spotlight a Colleague
Every issue we would like to spotlight a colleague, a recognition for having done something for another, both big and small, it would be great to hear about it.
This month we include a spotlight for Lorna Moran, for which the mention reads...
"My nomination is for Lorna Moran. I first met Lorna when I was still an undergraduate on Uclan's BA Hons in BSL & Deaf studies degree and I was working for a Deaf charity. She was so kind and always smiling, and my Deaf colleagues always wanted to book her - I knew then that she was the type of interpreter I wanted to be one day.
More recently I've been lucky enough to cowork with Lorna on a regular basis, and I can honestly say her reputation was well founded! She's an experienced and ridiculously skilled interpreter, yet not at all intimidating. As a newly qualified RSLI (<12 months), I've found Lorna to be an absolute dream to cowork with. I know she has my back and I feel like I can ask her advise without being judged. When I request feedback she offers it willingly, and I value her opinion.
I know as a newly qualified interpreter it can be a little intimidating sometimes to cowork with more experienced interpreters, but Lorna is the proof that it doesn't need to be! Coworking with her has allowed me to try different strategies in my work, whilst feeling safe that I have support there if needed. Hand on heart, Lorna has helped my develop as an interpreter and I'm so grateful".
We love being able to include these notes of recognition for those that go above and beyond in supporting their colleagues and the community. If you know would like to spotlight a colleague, email their name and reason for the nomination to northwest@asli.org.uk.
Communications
We hope all members are finding the monthly bulletins a useful source of information.
If you know of events, training, socials, etc happening in your area, pass this to us and help us keep other members informed by emailing the details to the committee.
The North West regional WhatsApp group if another way we get information to members, currently the group has 52 participants!
The WhatsApp group provides an avenue to receive information for those who prefer it to emails and checking the calendar. Just as a reminder, the purpose of this group is for the committee to send reminders, news, etc and will only allow one-way communication to receive information only. Any comments or responses will need to be sent to the NW Committee via email.
A reminder that phone numbers in a WhatsApp group are viewable to everyone in the group. For this reason, we will not add you without your permission. You can however request to be added to the group via an 'opt in' process. If you would like to be added please email northwest@asli.org.uk stating your name, number (most importantly) and that you wish to be added to the group.
Thank you to all who have emailed already, we have added everyone who requested into the group. If you change your mind at any time please let us know and we can remove you straight away.
As well as the WhatsApp group and emails we hope to be uploading bulletins and information onto the ASLI website soon.
ASLI Support Groups
Prompted by a members ask, we thought it would be nice to include some potential dates for your diary in this month's bulletin.
- The next maternity Leave Support group meeting will be held on 16th January.
- The session for Parents Support Group on 23rd January.
These sessions will soon be added to the ASLI calendar for you to join.
Upcoming CPD and Socials
The committee have planning in the works for upcoming CPD sessions, we are waiting for details to be finalised before they go out, we have listened to members feedback and will get details and session information out very soon, so keep an eye on your emails and the WhatsApp group for further information.
These include an Islamic Signs session, as well as a repeat of last year's Making Tax Digital session. Additionally, Richard Collins from UCLAN who is doing his PhD on socially sensitive signs we be doing a webinar to discussing this, with the session involving a presentation and group discussions.
Friday 13th December 2024 - A no affiliation social has been organised for some after work drinks. This is being arranged by a couple of North West interpreters who have offered an open invite for interpreters, non-interpreters, hearing or deaf, friends of friends, to join for a bit of a get together.
The plan is to meet at the Kimpton clock tower hotel bar, (also known as Refuge) in Manchester from 6pm.
We look forward to seeing you all in 2025!
