*Community Event* Deaf Teachers in Education: A Panel Discussion
20th February 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
The BSL (Scotland) Act includes an aim to encourage more deaf
BSL users to become teachers, and to encourage more children to use
BSL. However, Scotland currently has very few teachers fluent in BSL.
EdSign is pleased to welcome 3 deaf teachers to our panel discussion,
Kieran Gemman and Jamie Dow, both currently working in schools with
deaf children and Dr Audrey Cameron who is teaching the next
generation of teachers. We also welcome Dr Elizabeth Mathews from
Ireland. She will discuss the new initial teacher education for deaf
Irish Sign Language users that she recently set up. Rachel O’Neill
will chair the panel and bring news of a new degree in primary
education for fluent BSL users, planned for the University of
Edinburgh.
Bring your questions to find out more about how deaf education is
changing in Scotland as a result of the BSL Act.
