Interpreting Overtly Sexual Content

Travel arrangements: There is no parking on-site but there is some limited on-street parking (£5.50 for max 4 hours). Alternatively, take Bus 1 or 7, get off at College Place and the venue is a 4 minute walk away.

• This workshop will focus on strategies when the source message is overtly sexual in content.The emphasis will be working from English into BSL and how to avoid taking the content onto the body. We will consider the difference between embodiment and role-shift.
• Please note this workshop will use material containing extreme sexual content. All of the content will be sex-positive with no material containing depictions of harm or violence.There will be NO expectation to share personal attitudes to sex and sexuality. However, the workshop may provoke private reflection as we discuss and work with the materials.
• The workshop will be conducted in British Sign Language.
• The trainer is Sue MacLaine who has been a working interpreter since 1997 having completed the postgraduate course at the Centre for Deaf Studies in Bristol. Sue has worked in a variety of domains with specialism in mental health, academia and interpreting live performance.
• More information regarding the workshop will be forthcoming nearer the time. However, it is anticipated to be a mixture of lecture and seminar alongside solo self-reflection.  An atmosphere of generous, kind, rigourous curiosity will be cultivated.
