Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Training

This will be run by Simon Smith from Zakon

Modern slavery and Human Trafficking are horrendous crimes and hidden in plain sight all around us. As the number of investigations increase, so does the demand for professional interpreters and this workshop helps interpreters to build their knowledge and confidence in interpreting these offences

Since legislation introduced in 2015, the number of cases of modern slavery and human trafficking being investigated is increasing with many vulnerable victims being unable to speak English and requiring the expertise of a professional interpreter

This workshop explains the legislation and focusses on the unique and unusual terminology that the offences present. It explores the various parts of the investigation process that interpreters may become involved in and what is expected of them to enable them to fulfil their role confidentially and effectively. It also covers interpreter specific law, guidance and policy around these offences which interpreters should be aware of. Whilst aimed at interpreters, this day is beneficial to many professional groups or individuals that may wish to raise their knowledge and awareness in this area

This practical workshop also includes a demonstration of a modern slavery victim being visually recorded during their interview, and what interpreters can do to ensure that this withstands subsequent court scrutiny. The day concludes with an interactive case feed, packed full of lessons from real life modern slavery offences involving interpreters. Delegates then work their way through the cases with the facts and issues as were presented for real during the investigation and subsequent court trials. Our highly experienced trainers facilitate this by drawing out topical issues, key points, and offer guidance through knowledge and experience, all underpinned with links to law, guidance and policy

As with all of our workshops, the days is interactive and packed with exercises to encourage delegate participation

The Zakon team has vast experience in investigating these crimes and runs criminal investigation skills training for the Gangmaster Labour and Abuse Authority who investigate these offences and for the first time, this knowledge is available to share more widely
