*Online* West Midlands – Dr Sally Austen: Interpreting difficulties when working with clients who have mental health, linguistic and cognitive challenges

Sally is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience in psychology, specialising in deafness, expert witness work, media, publication, training and supervision.

In this session she will explore the challenges we have as interpreters whilst working with clients who have mental health, cognitive and linguistic challenges.

Dr Sally Austen, Consultant clinical psychologist

I have worked in the NHS with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who have mental health or cognitive problems for 30 years. My obsession is how language reveals so much about how a person is feeling and what cognitive skills or difficulties they have: that that is so much easier to spot in sign language than in speech.

In my private work (Austen Psychology), I provide training and supervision to psychologists and interpreters. My mission being to take things that appear complicated and demystify them.

I also do some Expert Witness court work, which requires a bizarre mix of humility and arrogance.

I am co-editor of Deafness in Mind, Austen and Crocker, 2004 and Deafness and Challenging Behaviour, Austen and Jeffery (2007).

I also have a book coming out soon entitled:

in clinical, legal, educational, and social care settings, Austen and Holmes (in press)

This two hour session, equalling two structures CPD points, will be delivered in spoken English – please let us know if you require a BSL/English interpreter or have any other additional access requirements.
