Paul Redfern: Evolution from missioners to modern day interpreters – or not?
October 19 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeThe session will start with a brief introduction of myself, followed by a brief history of how SLI’s have evolved from the days of missioners. We will then consider a recent scenario in break-out groups which debates the degree of responsibility for the interaction between the Deaf professional and the hearing person/s.
If there is time, we will then consider a second scenario again in break-out groups about differing expectations from the Deaf professional and the SLI.
There will throughout the whole session be ample opportunity to ask questions and raise points for consideration.
The session is conducted in BSL and will be recorded.
About Paul:
I’m now semi-retired, working part-time with Action Deafness as a Training and Compliance Manager delivering training to staff. Am also the Chair for the All Wales Deaf Mental Health and Wellbeing Group. Have worked as a manager for the British Deaf Association and Richmond AID, and worked in Swaziland (now Eswatini). And was the lead writer for Teach Yourself BSL (still selling after 13 years…).
I would estimate that my experiences of working with interpreters has been 90% positive. So that’s a good start!
