Webinar: Excellent English writing and grammar for BSL interpreters and translators
20th July 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free – £15.00Presenter: Lauren Harris.
Lauren will knock your written English (gently!) into shape and enlighten you on the intricacies of English grammar, punctuation and style.
As BSL interpreters, we often take for granted native-level mastery and understanding of our mother-tongue, English, focusing instead on perfecting our fluency in our second, signed language(s).
Translators whose first language is BSL need to be able to read between the lines of an English text to understand what the (usually hearing) author is really trying to say, however subtly. Or they may have to render a pre-prepared BSL text into English (such as captions), conveying not only the original meaning but finding equivalent nuances in written English appropriate for a hearing audience.
Lauren Harris has over 20 years’ experience as an editor, proofreader, speechwriter and translator of French, German, and Dutch into English. Words are her thing! Lauren is also a TSLI currently enrolled on the PG Diploma in BSL/English Interpreting and Translation at the University of Central Lancashire. She is a student member and a former Board Director of ASLI.
In this webinar, Lauren will cover:
– Talking about English grammar: the parts of speech and what they do
– Top tips on how to punctuate an English text correctly
– Register, tone and style: adapting a text to fit the target audience
– Editing an English text written by someone else for clarity
– Enlarging your English vocabulary
This webinar is free to ASLI members.
This will be presented in spoken English but we will provide interpreters if needed. Please email training@asli.org.uk if you will require an interpreter.
