Burnout is a slow onset and therefore can be experienced at varying degrees of intensity and of which there are known multiple causational factors. Conversely\, secondary traumatic stress can be acquired from a single involvement with a person experiencing trauma. \nThis course provides delegates with a full understanding of compassion fatigue\, drawing from the latest research. Methods and tools will be used to develop self-monitoring skills\, together with holistic strategies for developing resilience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCourse Agenda \n1. Identify with the risks to wellbeing in providing compassionate care. \n2. Self-assess for levels burnout\, secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction. \n3. Identify with the ‘Cycle of Caring’ (Skovholt & Trotter-Mathison\, 2010) and its significance for maintaining well-being and warding off burnout. \n4. Define the rewards and joys of caring and how these promote ‘compassion satisfaction’. \n5. Explore a range of techniques\, strategies and approaches to promote resilience and minimise the effects of compassion fatigue. \n6. Develop a personal ‘self-care action plan’. \n\n\n\nMike is a Senior Lecturer in Counselling Studies at the University of South Wales and an experienced Mental Health Counsellor for the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
