Does Extralinguistic Knowledge Matter?
27th November 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Naomi Sheneman, a lecturer at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY and a doctoral candidate at Gallaudet University, will present research inspired by her own struggles with access to information when she was diagnosed with cancer. This is qualitative research using Filmore’s frame semantic model looking at the impact of extralinguistic knowledge on the translation products of cancer texts by Deaf interpreters. It compares the translated products of one Deaf interpreter with, and one Deaf interpreter without personal and professional experience of cancer. These translation products were then compared with that produced by a Deaf professional in oncology. The webinar will be delivered in ASL with an ASL to spoken English interpretation.
