ASLI London region is pleased to invite Dr Hattie Bowden-Howl to present a two-hour session on 'trauma-informed boundaries in BSL interpreting', which aims to consider the role of trauma in your work as BSL interpreters and how this may affect boundaries. There will be opportunity to discuss other influences such as our role in the systems that surround us (utilising the ecological model), how we feel about our roles, being an ally to those who experience discrimination and marginalisation and how this further contributes to the felt trauma of not being heard (literally and metaphorically) and validated. A lot to pack in but this will all be introductory – Hattie mostly wants to facilitate a peer conversation, as she feels we do most of our learning when we listen to each other. Hattie has delivered this to many interpreters already (2022) with great feedback: "There are many occasions in our work when unforeseen situations arise which may be attributed to trauma. It was interesting to be reminded to consider and be aware of our own feelings as well as how the client is feeling." "I'm not sure exactly what my expectations were, other than to be in a safe space to openly discuss, which I was!" When asked if they would recommend the training: "Yes, it reminds us as interpreters the importance of boundaries, how to deal with them and why they may occur." Presenter Bio Dr Hattie Bowden-Howl is a Clinical Psychologist and has worked in mental health for over 12 years (including CAMHS and looked after children, including with their foster carers). Hattie has also worked in perinatal services, and in Child Protection. Her specialist interests are complex/developmental trauma as well as ways of relating such as attachment. Hattie is deaf, and uses BSL and speech.
This event is limited to 9 participants so if you have already attended this in the past, please allow others to participate this time.
Hopefully, part two will be delivered in later in the year for more informed learning and discussion building on what has been learned in the introduction. Please also be mindful of each other and only book if you are certain you will attend. Any questions/comments please email us directly at southeast@asli.org.uk and not the office; they're really busy (and probably won't know the answer to your question as they don't have anything to do with organising this event ✨) We look forward to seeing you.
