Webinar: Exploring Horizontal Violence Amongst BSL/English Interpreters

18th February 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Free – £25.00

Exploring Horizontal Violence Amongst BSL/English Interpreters

Presenters: Brett Best and Rachel Wilkins

This webinar explores the concept of horizontal violence—bullying behaviours amongst colleagues that are made with negative intentions and may cause the recipient anxiety or stress. We will look at results from a recent survey of BSL/English interpreters to gain insight into this phenomenon in our own profession and consider whether or not such behaviours might happen differently in face-to-face versus online situations. Causes of horizontal violence, consequences and suggestions for mitigating its occurrence in the signed language interpreting profession will be also discussed.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to define horizontal violence

2. Participants will be able to define the concept of online disinhibition/keyboard courage

3.Participants will be able to explain how keyboard courage may relate to horizontal violence

4.Participants will be able to to give at least one example of horizontal violence in a face-to-face situation and at least one example in an online context
