The Self-Promotion Ick: Why Advertising Performance Work Feels So Hard is a facilitated, discussion-based conversation for interpreters who recognise that familiar awkwardness around promoting performance work.
Challenges of self-promotion
We’ll explore why advertising our work can feel uncomfortable, including:
? Whose job it is to publicise an interpreted performance
? Self-promotion shame and the fear of “doing it wrong”
?The habit of keeping quiet and how training and professional norms influence us
Boundaries, ethics, and visibility
Together, we’ll talk through:
?Personal vs professional lines on social media
? Boundaries, confidentiality and ethical considerations
? Different interpreter views on visibility and promotion
Access and awareness
We’ll also touch on:
? The reality that interpreted performances aren’t always visible
❓ Deaf audiences not always knowing when access is available
? How silence, even when well-intentioned, can sometimes become a barrier
This session is an open, supportive space to ask questions, share experiences, and sit with the discomfort without judgement. It’s discussion-led and collaborative, with no pressure to have answers — just an opportunity to think together and explore individual ways forward that feel manageable, ethical, and realistic.
