Earlier this month, we said goodbye to Karen after a short illness. It’s hard to put into words just how
much she meant to me. She was my Auntie, my Godmother, and truly one of the pillars of my life—
steady, strong, and always there.
I owe my career as a sign language interpreter to Karen. Back in 2000, I’d dropped out of Art college
and was drifting, unsure of what came next. Then Karen called. She asked if I’d be interested in
covering a maternity leave at Hamilton Lodge School and College (HLSC) as a part-time teaching
assistant. My grandparents were both profoundly deaf, so I had cultural understanding — but barely
any sign language. I was thrown in at the deep end, but I found my footing quickly. That one call
changed everything. I stayed at HLSC for 17 years before setting off on my interpreting journey.
If Karen hadn’t reached out all those years ago, I wouldn’t be where I am today. She believed in me —
professionally, personally, unwaveringly. She was a constant presence, a quiet force of
encouragement and love. I honestly don’t know how I’ll navigate life without her.
I know many of you knew Karen and thought fondly of her too. As a family, we’re hoping to raise funds
in her name to bring a small light from this incredibly difficult time. If you’re able to donate at
