Can I use AI for this?

A simple decision guide for BSL/English interpreters and translators

AI can be a useful tool for supporting administrative tasks, drafting, proofreading, summarising or analysing documents. However, interpreters and translators remain responsible for protecting confidentiality, complying with data protection law, and ensuring the accuracy of their work.

Important: AI should support your professional judgement — it should never replace it.

Before using AI, remember:

  • You remain responsible for the final work you produce.
  • Do not assume AI is accurate.
  • Consider both confidentiality and personal data before entering information into an AI tool.
  • Only share the minimum information necessary and anonymise wherever possible.
  • Consider whether the AI service you are using is appropriate for confidential or sensitive information.
  • Respect copyright, intellectual property and the rights of the person or organisation that created the material.
