Testing should take no more than 45 minutes and participants can receive a report of their results if they wish. Please feel free to bring some snacks to share. \nA lot of employers use psychometric testing to select employees from their applicant pool. This can\nbe part of a job application\, interview or in a so-called assessment centre.\nThe test they use are standardized. This means that the same test is used for all participants. Many\nsuch tests have been translated into other languages but not into sign languages. This research aims\nto find out whether test results are different for hearing and Deaf people who use BSL (British Sign\nLanguage). Three different areas will be tested: Verbal (your understanding of the meaning of English\nwords and sentences)\, Numerical (your understanding of mathematical concepts) and abstract (your\nability to find patterns and understand the order in which they occur). You will be given examples to\npractice before you start.\n\n\n\nQuestions we will discuss:\n1. What is psychometrics and when is it used?\n2. What are ability tests and how are they created?\n3. What are some of the issues of psychometric testing for Deaf people and interpreters?\n4. What is the aim of the present study and how might it be the first step towards\nimprovements in theory and practice?\n\n\n\nIf anyone has a laptop they can bring\, that would enable us to test more individuals simultaneously.\n\n\n\nJenny Koehring is a registered freelance interpreter. She is currently studying for a master’s degree in\noccupational psychology and has a keen interest in cross-disciplinary research. In addition\, she is a\nboard member for the association of sign language interpreters (ASLI)\, where she works with her\ncolleagues to raise awareness for the profession\, standards within\, and the needs of clients and\ncommunities. She lives with her partner\, son and cat in Derbyshire and when she’s not interpreting\,\nstudying\, volunteering or travelling around the country for Deaf and sign language related events\, she\nenjoys cooking and going for a walk in the countryside.
